Lessons Learned: How Living in Japan Changed My Perspective
Five years ago, I made the life-changing decision to pack up my life in the UK and move to Japan. Living in Japan hasn’t just changed my surroundings – it has completely shifted my mindset, both personally and professionally. From navigating a new culture and language to building a career as a photographer and travel writer, every challenge along the way has brought a lesson. Japan’s unique blend of tradition and modernity, its serene landscapes and bustling cities, and its attention to detail have all taught me to approach life with more patience, curiosity, and purpose. In this post, I want to share the key lessons I’ve learned; about travel, career growth, and building a brand that reflects my experiences.
Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
Immersing myself in local customs, language, and daily life has been both challenging and enriching. Initially, everything felt foreign—from the way people greeted each other to the intricate etiquette of dining. I had to embrace the discomfort of not knowing and learn to navigate the nuances of a different culture. Each day presented an opportunity to engage with locals, practice my Japanese, and understand the subtleties of Japanese society. These experiences pushed me beyond my comfort zone, fostering personal growth and resilience. By confronting challenges head-on, I discovered a deeper connection to the culture and the people, ultimately reshaping my worldview.

The Power of Serendipity
Tokyo seems to have this way of presenting opportunities at just the right time. By constantly putting myself out there and saying yes to as much as I could, I found that unexpected connections often led to meaningful experiences. Whether it was stumbling upon a little-known café while exploring a new neighbourhood or meeting someone who would later become a valuable collaborator, these moments enriched my life in ways I never anticipated. Embracing spontaneity has allowed my work, friendships, and passions to intertwine, creating a number of experiences that have significantly shaped my journey.
Endless Stories
Japan is a never-ending source of inspiration and stories. From traditional crafts that reflect centuries of artistry to journeys into the serene countryside, each experience has offered a wealth of narratives waiting to be uncovered. I’ve had the privilege of learning about the meticulous process behind various Japanese crafts and engaging with artisans who pour their souls into their work. Travelling through Japan has allowed me to gather countless stories, culminating in the publication of my book, Views from Japan. Each chapter captures the essence of the places I’ve visited and the people I’ve met - cultural experiences that continue to inspire me.
Slow Travel
Living in Japan has taught me the ultimate luxury of travelling at a slow pace, allowing me to take my time exploring and learning along the way. Rather than rushing from one destination to another, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of lingering in a place and soaking in its atmosphere. Whether wandering through the tranquil gardens of Kanazawa or savouring a cup of matcha in a quiet teahouse, I’ve learned that the journey is as important as the destination. This approach has deepened my understanding of Japanese culture and enabled me to forge genuine connections with the people and places I encounter, creating lasting memories that resonate long after I leave.

Building a Career Out of Travel
When I first moved to Japan, I didn’t have a complete plan, but one thing led to another, and I turned my love for travel into a career. Initially, it was about exploring and discovering, but gradually, I found ways to share those experiences through writing and photography. It’s been a journey filled with ups and downs, and while it’s not always easy, the rewards are profound. The dream of doing what I love while living in a country that inspires me is now a reality. This transformation has taught me to be adaptable, resourceful, and completely open to the unexpected opportunities that arise along the way.
Not Everyone Will ‘Get It’
Not everyone understands the allure of living abroad, whether it’s friends back home or even new acquaintances I’ve met in Tokyo. There are moments when I’ve felt the weight of this disconnect, as some people may not grasp the depth of my experiences or the reasons behind my choices. And that’s 100% okay. Each person has their own journey, shaped by individual perspectives and experiences. This realisation has allowed me to embrace my path without feeling the need for validation from others. Ultimately, it has strengthened my resolve to pursue what brings me joy, regardless of whether others understand or appreciate it.
Building Trust and Building a Brand
Establishing my brand has been a journey of building trust—both with myself and my audience. I’ve learned to listen to my instincts and stay true to my vision, allowing my experiences and values to shape my brand’s identity. This has involved sharing authentic stories and insights that resonate with my audience, fostering a sense of connection. Trust is essential in the travel industry, where people seek genuine recommendations and perspectives. By remaining transparent and committed to my craft, I’ve built a brand that reflects not only my passion for travel but also the cultural richness of Japan, encouraging others to explore and appreciate this beautiful country.
